    Sensitive Teeth

aTooth sensitivity is a very common condition and is often indicative of an undetected tooth problem. Teeth become sensitive when the dentin or root surface become exposed to the oral cavity. This can occur for various reasons, including gum infections or recession, clenching or grinding of teeth, brushing hard in improper directions, cavities, abrasive toothpastes and the exposure to tooth whitening products, to name a few.

Using special toothpastes for sensitive teeth that are high in potassium nitrate and fluoride content can assist in reducing sensitivity related to gum recession. Additionally, the use of sealants, desensitizing ionization, filling material being placed with fluoride releasing capabilities and decreasing the intake of acid rich foods, can also help alleviate some forms of tooth sensitivity. For more extreme responses to thermal stimuli, such as hot and cold products that do not readily resolve by the above methods, further investigation from a dentist is often warranted.
